Interesting. I'll look into it. Also, to pay back, you may want to look into Torque app. Little dongle from Amazon $13 worth, and suddenly you have pretty decent power train info on your display.

Is this why people appear to be texting and driving?

I got it about two months ago. Since then I've driven from Chicago to Wyoming, and it was pretty good at alerting me of speed traps. I don't really speed, so it wasn't really that useful, but it did its job.

Have it installed and already used on the way home. It's OK. Great distrector too. And soooo cute. But it does show traffic jams, accidents, but sort of too late, you are head into it when it happens. Reporting is quite easy, just make a choice of standard report/conditions and hit send.
I'll entertain myself with it for few days.
I like how she said, instead of "please, do legal U-turn when possible" a very casual "Hey, turn back!".

You can turn that off.

Waze doesn't require several hundred dollars worth of radar detector and power cord.

It's one of many reasons why people are paying attention to their phones rather than the road.

You can use this app with as little distraction as using a GPS if one chooses to.

How helpful has it been to you in avoiding traffic, accidents & speed traps? Do you add in reports yourself or do you just piggyback on others' information?
Both my and my wife's commutes can vary from 15 minutes to over an hour. Waze consistently predicts our arrival times within 5 minutes, which is pretty good given the huge degree of variability involved in our commutes. We have found its traffic avoidance algorithms to be much more reliable than standalone GPS units because Waze has traffic data on most arterial streets where standalone units mostly only have data on expressways/freeways. Standalone units used to route us on to arterial surface streets that were just as bad or worse than the expressways whose clogged traffic we were trying to avoid. Waze will only re-route you onto arterial surface streets if they really are the quicker option. Otherwise it'll instruct you to just slog it out on your normal route.

You can contribute traffic/camera/accident/etc. reports yourself -- that's the whole premise of Waze is that the users themselves are providing the information to each other.

I use it everyday for the past couple of years, even though I know which route I'll be taking, so I can give the feeback to help others on the road. It does have some quirks, but is getting better.

Now that Google has bought them, you will see parts of Waze showing up in Google Navigation.
