I rather avoid getting into a crash in the first place rather than worrying about surviving one.

I would agree. I drove in Germany, and noticed that people DO NOT SIT IN THE LEFT LANE, OR PASS ON THE RIGHT. Much more predictable.

Until we get rid of the mentality that driving is a right rather than a privilege, our driving will not improve. I also believe we have a lot of unsafe vehicles out there that would not pass any halfway decent inspection standard.

The typical American driver is a moron, zip down the road going 70 mph and your lucky if drivers behind you give you 2 car lengths, when it should be at least seven. And don't get me started on lane changes. If a driver behind you can get a few cars ahead of you, they pass on the right, left, hell the sidewalk is fair game if they can get a few hundreds feet farther ahead in traffic.

Maybe the wars killed off all the morons, thin the herd as you will. There are certainly more than a few moron's America can do without.

Yeah, I though it was going to be about when we learned to get the headlight dimmer up off the floor.

I've driven in 41 countries, 25 in Europe and 16 elsewhere, and I don't think driving in the USA is so bad. The big thing about driving in the USA is that it is affordable. Cheap beaters, cheap gas, you just have to learn to be responsible for your attentiveness and anticipate surprises, assuming there will be some. Everything in life is dangerous, you have to find a balance point. It's just not the American tradition to have everything so strictly regulated as the Germans seem to love to do.
