Dodge is going to release a light duty 1500 Ram with an Italian made diesel engine. Get ready to trade in those pointy toed cowboy boots for some pointy toes loafers.
Meanwhile, Nissan announced they will also make a light duty diesel PU but with a Cummins diesel. Trade in your flashy colored old school style basketball shoes for some work boots.
Americans - Italian diesel
Japanese - American Diesel.
Go figure. Next thing you know, if someone asks a Ram owner if they have a Hemi, they'll start saying "No, I've got a Wankel".
Chrysler isn't really American company anyway. It's an registered here but owned by Fiat. I mean, how many of the flag wearing patriots always squawk about follow the profits? The profits of Chrysler go to Fiat. It's an Italian company in that respect.
Fiat goes Fiat. As straight shooter said, that's not surprising.
The 3.0 diesel V6 going into the Ram 1500 is built by VM Motori--a company with an interesting history. Started by Italians in 1947, it eventually wound up being bought by Detroit Diesel Corporation in 1995. In 2003, Chrysler Group purchased 49% of Detroit Diesel (which included VM Motori), with Penske Group owning 51%. In 2007, General Motors bought 50% of VM Motori, with the remaining 50% stake of VM Motori owned by Penske. Then, in 2011, Fiat bought Penske's 50% stake, making Fiat and GM 50/50 owners of VM Motori. So, the 3.0 diesel V6 going into the Ram 1500 is produced by a company half-owned by General Motors. (All-in-all, an interesting turn of events, since Detroit Diesel itself started out as a GM subsidieary.)
As for the engines themselves, VM Motori diesel engines have a strong reputation for durability--they are a good product.
