Two different deadly fiery crashes happened today on the freeway, both within 70 miles of my location in northeast Tennessee. One in east Tennessee on I-40 killed 8 people and seriously injuring many more when a tire blew on a church tour bus and lost control, causing it to hit an 18-wheeler that burst into flames and another killing 3 people on I-81 in southwest Virginia when a tanker truck burst into flames.

There were two other crashes today on I-81 within 30 miles of me, but those had no fatalities. I travel this freeway daily and the way people drive is unbelievable... it really makes you not want to travel on them.

What a tragedy...

Here is the one in Tennessee (links are from our local NBC TV station - WCYB)

This is the one in SW VA...

There have actually been several "fiery" crashes within 50 miles of here on the freeway within the past 6 weeks. Something we never heard much of before. A UPS truck crashed about 2 weeks ago and it burst into flames, killing the driver - also involved was a motorhome with injuries to the passengers in that crash. I don't remember the details of the other crash.

Speed was not a factor in either accident. Slowing down on the freeway will not prevent accidents like these. One was an inattentive truicker who ran into a construction crew (he might have fallen asleep after too many hours on the road), the other was a tire blowout on a bus. There is no indication that either was traveling above the speed limit or the speed of the flow of traffic.

Speed is rarely a factor in freeways accidents, bad drivers who would not move from passing/left lane is a much bigger factor.

Where I live, in Arkansas, the most common phrases used in the newspaper when covering fatal accidents are......"killed when their vehicle crossed the center line and hit head on.........."
........................" was killed after being ejected from their vehicle "

No excuse for either !

We do not need any roads here with unlimited speed limits.

What is the point of showing excessive speeding on the Autobahn? They have many high speed crashes because the drivers are not trained for those speeds, like the driver in the video.

I'm not "slowing down" if I don't have to but I AM going to properly maintain my vehicle so that the tire doesn't blow on a whim.

It's sickening that people talk about speed so much yet ignore the real killers.

A couple years back a Smyth County Police guy was killed on I-81...driving like an idiot on a slick road without using a seat belt. "Ejected from the vehicle' I believe was the local attribution.

I got the lecture from the local sheriff, and when I sent in the $$$ from my radar trap ticket (78 in a 65), I suggested that they use the money for driver training for their police force. Not surprisingly, I got no response.

The sheriff has since been relieved of his duty.... facilitating drug trafficking was the reason, I believe.

And people are still dying on their highway; apparently the example set by the local constabulary is sadly being followed.
