Here is a heat gun. You can see it's very tedious and does not produce a uniform color. In addition, you can't get right up to the paint because you risk overheating the metal and flaking off the paint.

Thanks for this. I've been wanting to try this and thought I'd check here (CD) to see if anyone else has tried it. Applying once a year sounds great! Have you tried it on the tires also?

I've tried many trim restorers and the absolute best, by far, are the silica-based coatings that have come out in the last few years. These would be products like Gtechniq C4, CarPro DLUX, 22PLE VR1, and others. I have a year-old application of Gtechniq C4 on my daily driver, which most days sits in a light rail station parking lot all day, and it looks as good as the day it was applied. Products bought locally from the auto parts store, like "Back to Black", "Black Wow", etc have never lasted more than a few weeks and begin visibly deteriorating from the day they are applied.

They are a bit pricy, at $40 for a tiny bottle, but I've applied C4 to three cars and still have about 1/3rd of the bottle left.

There are tons of reviews of C4 in various detailing and car forums - do a search if you have a hard time believing a product you've never heard of could be this good.

I have seen the results, and it's oddly amazing. Just rub it in lightly with a microfiber cloth, as if it were car wax, and polish dry.
Where I live that would likely attract ants or rodents. I wonder how long the smell lasts? Every time somebody got near the car they'd be like "hey do you smell peanut butter?". LOL
