I saw this on the Steve Harris show just a few seconds ago, walking in the door...according to Steve,

Dodge Dart was almost named the Zipp
Ford Edsel was almost named the Utopian Turtletop
The Plymouth Barracuda was almost named the Panda
And the best one....the Ford Mustang was almost named the Lafayette

Of course I also recall once reading that Chevy almost named the Camaro....the Panther....then again maybe that would have been fitting since Panthers are carnivores that will eat anything they catch...to include Mustangs.

I've always wanted a Panther.

Came close a few times to buying a Panther ... just never made it work.

Hopefully in 2014 I'll be able to get one!

LOL.. The Utopian Turtletop and The Lafayette? I wonder if the folks at Ford were smoking something back then..

no kidding. If the 'Mustang' started the 'Pony car revolution'...... if names changed then the Lafayette would have started what, the "Bayou car revolution"? Or been confused with Renaults as a French model?

While that is true, it should be remembered that just about any engine can be "built" to triple or more the horsepower it produced from the factory. It's common to see guys getting 600+ horsepower out of an old Chevy 350. So it's really all a moot point.

correct. and being in my 50's, was just comparing so-called old stock to new stock, since it always seemed the old iron was faster then it probably was

I'm with you on that age thing...

There's no doubt that they're cranking out some incredible speed from some of these smaller engines - and even shocking horsepower claims. But it's a different "kind" of power. Us oldsters know that. An '07 Peterbilt 379 comes from the factory with 450 horsepower, but only an idiot would think you could throw a "built" 450 hp Honda V-Tech into the truck and make it work.

If you geared it correctly it might last for a few weeks.
