This is how I do it. I just set my trip meeter to zero when I fill up. Note the mileage the next time I fill up and divide the mileage by the number of gallons it takes to fill. I have noticed that it can vary depending on what station go to and that tire inflation should
If you are not using cruise control most of the drive there is also going to be some variation depending on how heavy your foot is.

Cannot go by when a tank is empty (unless one runs out of gas) or full (unless every time one fills just overfills it).

Regardless, I still know that the American gas gives me more MPG. Wouldn't you agree?
If I consistently fill up the tank at the start of the round trip, and I always get all the way home with the American gas, and I always have to fill up 75 miles before I reach home if I'm using Canadian gas, and there has never been an exception to this, over 5 years... I can't see how not to come to that conclusion.
LOL, and its not as if every time we fill up with Cdn gas we drive like maniacs. We're sort of beyond that, in our late 50s now.
Are the prevailing winds enough to have an effect?
Last week I was heading North with a 40 MPH tail wind for ninety miles. I seemed that I could probably make it to Canada without filling up.
