Would you buy a diesel car? Looking to explore more about the pros and cons. Have read that there is some concern about diesel fuel being very toxic. Not sure how that applies to the cleaner diesel that is out there now with cars.
I suspect that my next car will be a (turbo)diesel. They're almost there with extracting horsepower numbers comparable to a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder gas engine, but with a whole lot more torque than the naturally aspirated can muster.
It all depends on what it's offered in and the price compared to its gas component. I'd prefer one in most CUVs/SUVS and compact cars, but I'd rather have gas in everything else. I'd probably want one in a compact truck as well.
Funny, I'm making that decision right now. The pros are the better fuel economy and efficiency. The cons are that the model is initially more expensive and diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline. So there's a trade-off that favors diesel more as you drive more miles.
I don't drive a lot of miles, so that's a consideration.
Yes, I think Diesel makes most sense for offroad vehicles, jeeps, tractors and trucks. I don't understand why more SUV (with offroad capability) don't get such engines.
GM starts making small trucks with diesel.
Diesels has been all over the world and in Europe since days as old as automotive history. I seriously doubt, Europeans are stupid enough to be poisoned with toxic gas for all those years.
They used to be lame to drive, that they were. Same time, engines are incredibly reliable and indeed, they do provide better mpg, what is normally nullified by offsetting diesel fuel prices.
I think, you need to make a main decision. Do you want fun drive, or reliability and fuel economy? Which is, VW lost its reliability edge years ago and Mercedes simply costs too much. But if you want fun car, well, diesels are likely still not to be up to that task.
