Also, your last sentence really shows your ignorance.
I doubt you have ever worked on a 99 Mercury Tracer or ever ridden in them.
They shared many parts with Mitsubishi back then....
It was Mazda not Mitsubishi... Mitsubishi has never had a partnership with Ford Motor Company which includes Mercury.
It all depends on why he was trying to sell you on all the flushes... Could it be that your Car has never had any services? Could your coolant be original from 6 years ago? You see, the question isn't on whether or not you're being overcharged on these repairs, but, whether or not you need these repairs.
This post made me laugh so hard I spilled my coffee.
80,000 miles on shock replacement ?
I sure hope she doesn't use her car in work and gets reimbursed for mileage as I doubt any place pays mileage high enough to allow for 11cents per mile for shock and strut replacement.

They shared many parts with Mitsubishi back then and Consumer Report gave them excellent reviews both as a new car and used.
I do believe many of those garage owners who are ............"parts pushers"........post here.
Mercury Tracer is a Ford Escort. They shared no parts with Mitsubishi. Dodge was who shared with Mitsubishi products. Ford and Mazda shared designs, engines and some chassis and design stuff. Oh I had a friend with a Ford Escort. It rides like a typical econobox . Hey you just got the perfect car that seems to never wear out and we all got the normal cars that wear out. Lucky you.

I had a new 97 Tracer and a new 99 Tracer.
Can you explain why those Tracers got much higher recommendations from Consumer Report than the Ford Escort did ?
To the posters that say you should EXPECT to replace shocks and struts at 80,000 miles.
What piece of crap of a car are you driving.
If you believe over 11cents a mile expense for just shocks and struts is normal

I got bridges to sell you.
Because Mercury drivers were significantly older than Ford drivers. They didn't drive their cars as hard, and "generally" were more apt to do proper maintenance than Ford drivers. Same phenomenon existed when Buick and Oldsmobile shared platforms with Chevy and Pontiac. Buick and Olds versions were rated as "more reliable", because their owners were more mature than Chevy/Pontiac owners.
I don't know about bridges, but you can't sell us a new Mercury. The brand is dead.
OP, it's a Hyundai, the car maker pays about $8.00 per set from a supplier for the shocks/struts they use. They are designed for comfort not long lasting. This is true with most vehicles, original struts are cheaply made and usually last 40,000-60,000 depending on road conditions you're driving on.
When you get replacements the better quality struts/shocks on the market today they will probably last the lifetime of the vehicle, over 100,000 miles.
I have a Ford SUV that needed them replaced at 52,000 miles.
You can tell if your shocks/struts are bad or squeaking, just push on the vehicles bumper up and down several times, that'll indicate if something is wrong with them.

LOL
Just a thought, but if you're driving around in Mercury Tracers... You should probably be about the last person in line to bash what other people are driving LOL
