I'm looking for a cheap (15 k) car. I'm moving to a city with small street parking, so a subcompact is best. Ideally, I would buy a used miata, but there aren't any cheap ones around here with low mileage and a good history. If I am spending 15k, I'd rather buy new if I can't get the miata.

My priorities are new, subcompact, and great handling. I drive very conservatively, so acceleration and straight line speed aren't what I am concerned about.

My top contender is the Mazda2.

Around that price I'd look at the Ford Fiesta, Mazda 2 (related to the Ford) and Kia Rio.

There are more: New cars under $15k: http://www.automobilemag.com/new_cars/07/under_15k/

Have you looked for a CPO Miata? It would probably still be a bit over that budget but if it's the car you really want....Dealer near me has a 2010 grand touring with under 10K miles for $19K.

Just buy a compact. With 15K you should be able to get a Mazda 3 (2013-the older version), or a new Ford Focus. Both handle very well. I have test driven the stick shift on both.

Scion XB.. The 04 - 07 have plenty of room, great gas mileage and are a cool little car.. ( hint if you needed to move a small piece fo furniture or even wood for a project you can fit it in this model... You can even fit a piece fo lumber 8 ft long) The 08 - present are a bit bigger outside and a little smaller inside....

Hands down Scions. Still made in Japan under direct Toyota supervision.
As of Xb. 2nd gen has poor gas mileage, 1st gen one has much better one.

My brother just bought a new Dodge Dart Rallye last week end. 38 mpg, roomy and stylish interior and even though his was just over $17,000 the SXT model can be had for closer to $15,000. Dealers in my area are offering $2500-$3000 of msrp.

With your budget you could get a new base model standard shift Ford Fiesta. Not a bad little car. A friend of mine has one.

I have driven a Ford Fiesta. It is a perfectly adequate subcompact for the price.

A Honda Fit is a better vehicle overall though.

I love my Mazda2. Haven't had a moment's problem with it in the three years I've had it, and it does indeed take up very little space.
