Good response to the rude poster. I love the window sticker and T-shirt.

What year did self-service start? I can 't even remember the first time I ever pumped my own. l'm thinking it must have been around 1970, when I lived in Canada, and might have pumped my own for the first time on a trip to the US..

I moved to the US in 1979, and seems to me most were self-serve then? Although I do recall some gas stations offering the option of having a "pump jockey" fill up your car and check basics, for more per gallon.

In theory, the station could get a large fine for allowing this. I've lived in New Jerky all my life and I earned a good part of my college tuition in the '60s pumping gas. I don't know of any places that were so penalized, but it is a law. That being said, I have no desire to pump my own gas in the rain, snow, and cold. Why anyone gets their nether regions atwitter because they can't pump their own gas eludes me.

I'm an "elderly female". I don't pump gas. I live in PA and I use the gas station around the corner from my home. The station has some very nice pump jockeys and they do a nice job. I always give them a tip when they service my car.

I'm not a stupid person and I'm sure I could figure it out, (how to pump it myself) but since I pass the station no matter which direction I'm going, it just makes sense to stop there. And the price is usually the same as the self-service mini-mart up the street, and sometimes a penny or two less.

That's about it. IMO the OP think he or she is superior because they can pump their own gas.

Hell I pay the vet $10 to do my dogs anal glands. I did try it once, but ended up getting the dry heaves.

Besides, I can see doing that even for those who do pump their own gas normally. Picking up a rental car with a full tank of gas is like checking into a hotel room with the towels already in the room.
You don't understand what prepaying for a tank of gas with a rental car means, do you? Virtually all rental car companies expect you to return a car with a full tank. Most people choose to fill the car up on the way back to the airport.

But if that is too difficult for you, you can pay in advance for a full tank, usually at a significantly higher price than retail. It doesn't matter if you only drive 75 miles. You'll pay for a full tank. It is a waste of money (at least to me). 20 gallons @ $4 gal = $80. I'd rather pay for the gas I used and fill it up when I return the car.

It was actually less, it was $2.79 a gallon. Pre-paying for a full tank at the time of rental is not the same as paying them to fill it after you return it, that one was like $5.00 or more a gallon. We did spend more because we didn't use an entire tank, but it was still better and worth it to us than driving around a strange city at night (Chicago, Midway Airport) where we had no idea what areas were safe and which weren't looking for a gas station and pumping the gas.

Oh no, not at all!

When I wrote the OP I was unaware there were still states where you couldn't; I had not considered that angle. I acknowledged as much in a subsequent post. So given that, I did find it curious that in 2013, I ran into someone who couldn't. I was just curious how common it was, is all.

Trust me, if I lived somewhere where full-service gas stations were the norm, I'd be quite happy handing my debit card out the window and letting someone else do the work.

And I agree with you on expressing dogs' anal glands. That is some powerfully stinky stuff.
