I was at the gas pump today and a very sweet, well-dressed lady about 70 years old, asked me if I would help her operate the gas pump. She said her husband usually did it but she wanted to "surprise him" by doing it herself.

She was really clueless; didn't know how to work the card reader, get her gas cap off, how to operate the pump handle. In fact she splashed my shoes with gas because she forgot to release her grip on the pump handle when she pulled it out from the tank. We kind of had a laugh over all of this and agreed that it was a handy life skill.

I remember this being more common 20-30 years ago with older women, when it wasn't a given that all women of the previous generation could drive and pump their own gas. Does anyone know someone who can drive, but not pump gas?

I'm willing to bet you'll get a sizable minority if you ask on the Oregon forums.. it's illegal to pump your own gas there. I think a few other states also disallow customers from pumping their own gas.

Oh - LOL! I forgot that there are still a couple of states where you cannot pump your own gas.
That's sort of odd.

Reminds we of when I was in high school and this girl that worked at a part time job with me asked how do you know when to stop putting gas into the car so it doesn't overflow? Her dad had always done it so she had no idea it would cut off by itself. She was 18, maybe 19, but still, I had to laugh at her a bit.

I wish there was a way I could hold the pump steady while dragging my cigarette and talking on the cell phone (yes I've seen morons doing this).

Ive had workers at gas pumps in NJ start screaming at me as I went to pump my own gas.... I chuckled in shock and asked if he was serious. I wonder if they offer a hand for a wad of TP as well?

I dont mean to sound disrespectful towards these workers because its a job. I thanked him, but I was dumbfounded as I remembered NJ was like that and why it is still like that....?

Even if you don't know how to pump gas, how can you not realize that you need to release the grip on the pump handle before you take it out?

The first time I visited the US and hired a car I wasn't sure how to use the pumps.
