I hated car antennas as it screwed up the flow of the sheet metal. Power antennas were only marginally better as ultimately there would be a bump on fender. I'm glad they're gone.
Remember the early 60's cars with 'dual' antennas on the rear fenders? They were popular on the Chev Impala. Was it actually two operating antennas or was one for show?
Just one more part to break. I prefer the short stubby rubber kind, or the little fins. Unless you live way out in the country at the edge of reception, they're all you need anyway.
My aunt and uncle had a car with a power antenna in the rear. One day when my aunt was filling the gas tank, one of my cousins turned on the radio and the antenna went right up her nose!
I bought a car a few years ago that had one. One night I parked it and forgot to bring it down. The next day I found that some drunk POS had snapped it off at the base.
They looked very classy and having an antenna you get a much stronger signal than the integrated ones in today's cars. Or those little black things on compact hatch or SUV
Cost, and costly to replace - which everyone had to do.
