They looked very classy and having an antenna you get a much stronger signal than the integrated ones in today's cars. Or those little black things on compact hatch or SUV

Cost.
More parts to break.
Better electronics.
They weren't all that common.
Classy?
They were better than the ones that were integrated into the windshields in the 70's.
When are you actually going to own a car?

Mainly because the antennas are being built into the front or rear glass, having no visible antenna looks better than a whip.

I remember those awful power antenna contraptions! Doing away with those things was one of the best decisions auto companies ever made. I would much rather have a fixed mass antenna. Those power ones wuold invariably go bad after some amount of time, and require replacement. Cheap aftermarket ones could sometimes be made to work, but if you went with an OE you would be in for a pricey replacement.

They always break or the antenna gets bent somehow

or it makes an area for water to get in and ruin everything

+1......When they broke they always had the clunk/clicking sound of the motor working but the mast didn't!

Those had to go on a fender because of the motor and shaft below when not extended. Now cars all have a GPS and they put it with the antenna, on the roof for better signals. We had one on a 4Runner that died after only 60k miles, and the replacement cost was too much to be worth fixing. Luckily it stopped in the up position.

Cheaper and more streamlined to put in the glass. Less chance of damage although, when you do, that piece of glass ain't cheap. No matter, better design now. Radios are a fraction of their original size and 50X better.

My MX-6 has one and it is the same as the video. They are built on the same platform. The 626 is the 4 door MX-6.
