Miss: Vent windows, full size spare tires, bumper jacks (instead of the flimsy ones you get now), cars made of real metal (not "beer can" metal), full frames, large trunks, simplicity in the engine (I could work on them, no 101 sensors and lights), mirrors firmly attached to the car roof NOT glued to windshield where constant hot sun weakens glue mirror falls, fan/alternator belts instead of one serpentine belt that is harder than hell just to get to and kills everything when it breaks, tinted windshields

Don't Miss: failing starters, rusty bodies, door windows rattling, AM only radios, dimmer switch on floor sometimes rots/sticks

points.plugs. and line up every year. change oil and filter every 1000 miles. if you lived in new England your car had rust in 3 years. However you could buy a 3 year old car that had only 45000 miles on it in 1970 for 600 bucks!! I bought my 67 ford galaxie convertible with 54000 miles in 1974 for $800 at the dealers. I still have it!!

Where the brands looked different. Now, they all pretty much look the same.

Mostly just the change that was probably stuck in the seats.

Price. My first car was $300. My most recent purchase was $31K. I'm not sure the recent one is over 100 times better than my first.

Actually I don't miss much at all of my earlier vehicles except for the memories I made in and with them. Sometimes I wish I had the sedate comfort, quiet and power of my Mark VIII.

What I miss ...

1973 Mercury Comet: My first car; everyone has a soft spot for their first car, no matter how many times it leaves you stranded. It was rust colored, which came in handy when the car was 5 years old or so and started to rust.

1983 Mercury Lynx: My first new car, fire engine red. I loved the color. I think that was all I liked about it.

1987 VW Golf: The air conditioner - I could make it snow inside that car. Big trunk. I drove this car into the ground with relatively few problems, even after two accidents (not my fault!).

1994 Honda Civic hatchback: Great car for driving in the snow. It was that pretty teal color that was popular in the early 90s; I loved it.

1998 VW Golf: Loved pretty much everything about this car. I miss the heated seats. Believe it or not, I miss the cassette deck.

Meh. I miss the styling of days gone by, but as far as differences between models go I don't think the difference between my old 1966 Galaxie and 1967 Fury are any more significant that the late-model Lincoln and 300C setting side-by-side in the parking lot outside my window.
