Ok, we bought a car to flip it.
Gal who sold it had vanity plates on it and kept them.
We have open date title on hand and for reasons obvious do not want to register vehicle, until it's sold to a new owner to be.
How do we go about test drives? I have some funny ideas, but all are sort of iffy.
I sold cars without MY vanity plates before, but I kept them on until car was sold and told buyer to buy driving permit. This is different.
1) Throw plates on it from another car and hope the cops don't stop you
2) Register the car and pay for plates/ins to play it safe.
3) Have them take the test drive with no plates/ins and hope for the best
4) Plates, "we don't need no stinkin plates".
Unless you are a dealer, it's likely illegal to leave the title open while you flip the car. Yo might as well run without plates, you're already a scofflaw.
Yeah, I like 1, 3, and 4. Plenty of plates around and no big deal to toss ones off any of our running cars on. We are quite in sticks, but... Camaro sounds like my kind of person. Thanks, man.
Gnomad, it's not illegal not to register vehicle. State allows 30 days for registration. We'll get her flipped faster than that, besides - what 30 days? title is open date.
Does your state allow the use of plates from a POV you sold or traded in to be attached to a POV you purchased until you get full registration? If so, just take the plates from another car you own that is parked and use that as your tem plates. Unless you get stopped by the police, all you do is return the plates to the original owned vehicle when you sell the flipmobile. YOu can notify your insurance carrier and when flipped, just tell them you decided against keeping the car and took back your old vehicle.
Or you could simply say a test drive is out of the question and adjust the price accordingly. In life, you don't get something for nothing. If you don't want to fork out the cash on one end to register the car, then you get less for it on the other end in the selling price. There is always a compromise.
Beyond that, if it starts, goes forward and back, and it steers, half your battle with the 'test drive' is already won.
I won't even look at a car that's not registered in the SELLERS name. I don't care how good a price it is. Or if there is no paperwork/ownership title papers
