You get arrested and processed
Car gets impounded for 30 days
Then you have to go to court everyone. Brings up their evidence
Your license is suspended
Then depending if it's first offense and judge you may either go to jail or house arrest or community service.
You will have to go through a AA type of program
I never got a DUI but I dont drink. My BIL a few years ago got a DUI later reduced to wet reckless and he told me the process cause he was scared stiff of a DUI. He used to DUI all the time but he lived in the middle of nowhere. And that one day he got popped.
Cool thing is now if he has one drink he hands over the keys where before you would have to fight him
Wanted to add his cost was about 9k between court costs, AA classes and lawyer.

I've never gotten one either, but several of my friends have over the years. I think where you live largely determines the severity of the punishment. For example, on Long Island where I grew up, they impound your car and keep it for years. Then, you get a lawyer and spend tens of thousands of dollars trying to get your vehicle back and clear your name.
Otherwise, I don't want to to know what happens when you get a DWI. I will say that whatever the penalty, it is not strict enough. I'm no angel but I know enough when to give up the keys.
I cannot speak from personal experience, but I can from observation.
Typically: Say goodbye to $10,000, your license for a year, time spent for AA/Rehab classes, everyone else's time for whom drive you around and then some more money once you get a conditional with ignition interlock. Varies by state but that is what I've seen a few of my friends deal with.
If you are going to drink and drive, get a breathalyzer (that you periodically have calibrated by a state approved agency) and a dash cam because IMO they over enforce DWI/DUI laws just about everywhere now.

If you are busted, do they cuff you that night and you spend the night in jail?
Yep, usually they will hold you until you can be arraigned then bail is set and you get to sit in your cell and hope someone will divvy up and get you out.
DUI affects your job, job prospects, credit, insurance and how others look at you.

Not in any of the instances I have seen. If you are compliant usually you will end up in your own bed at the end of the night/day after being processed.
It likely varies from state to state. My buddy got into one. Bless his heart, he quit drinking thereafter. But, he made a deal with court. As a result, he had to attend DUI classes 5 nights a week for several years. Or, it'd have been DL loss and huge fine.
