After much internet searching, we've decided to look at this SUV tomorrow (it looks like a station wagon to me, but either way, I like it!):

Used 2005 Subaru Forester For Sale | Wiscasset ME

It's a little over budget, but the low mileage makes up for it. Plus there is a 12K or 12 month warranty included. Fingers crossed!

Looks good to me. Probably come down to $11K, which is reasonable to me. Has the basics, power seat, heated seats, and a kick a$$ AWD system! Tires look fairly new, make sure they match on all corners.

I've had two SUVs, both of which I feel good about recommending: a 2005 Forester and a 2007 Highlander Hybrid. The Forester was a great car, and we loved it. For long distance driving (due to physical comfort, additional cargo capacity, and to save a bit on gasoline due to the larger SUV), I preferred the Highlander, 6 cylinder with two electric engines to supplement the gas engine. The steering was not as tight as the Forester. As far as gas mileage savings, the first electric engine was great at lower speeds to supplement the gas engine, with a sweet spot around 52mph. The electric and gas went back and forth, going between the two depending on the need. The second electric engine in the Highlander mostly just seemed to help boost the six cylinder to deliver a tremendous power increase when needed like getting on highways. The average around town mileage was about 21-23 mpg. The highway was between 25-27. Not all that impressive compared to a lighter weight, 4 cylinder vehicle, however, one could consider the weight and size of the Highlander and then the mileage isn't bad. However, the Highland hybrid is expensive. If I bought another, I would not buy the hybrid, simply due to the sticker shock. However, I'm still driving the 2007 Toyota Highland hybrid now, and it hasn't required major repairs, and it runs just as well now as it did when I bought it 7 years ago.

no matter how nice it seems just make sure to take it to a Independent Mechanic or Subaru dealer to get it thoroughly checked out/inspected OP

Looks good if everything checks out with that Forester. Good luck!

In that case, the Forester is a good choice. As would be the RAV4, CRV, Escape, Rogue, or Mazda CX-5. All good vehicles that'll handle tough weather conditions. Don't know anyone with the Chevy Equinox, but it's probably good, too.

Rarely do you see a car thread go start to end with the OP doing what the majority suggests. Nice.

Thanks! I test drove 4 different vehicles, and after hearing nothing but good things about the Forester, I decided to go for it. Not only on city-data, but friends and neighbors also highly recommended the Forester. Glad I asked on this forum!
