I'm not about to second-guess someone who is an expert on Camaros, even having written a book about his passion. I am horrified that a dealership employee took it upon himself to take it for a spin when he had no business doing so. The dealership is responsible for his actions since he was in their employ and should compensate the couple for the loss of their vehicle and possibly even pursue the individual for liability. Whether or not to buy a car as a collectible is not at issue here. The issue is destruction of property and liability.
If the dealership was responsible for taking care of the car then their insurance should be responsible for replacing or repairing your car, the dealer would then have to sue its employee for its recompense..

This is what I do not understand.. The buyer's insurance should not even need to be involved. It is the dealer's problem.

The way it generally works is that the owners comprehensive/collision coverage would pay for the owners loss initially. His insurance company would then seek compensation from the at fault party and/or their insurance, in this case the dealership. Basically, the owners insurance will pay him what they value the car at and then they will pursue the dealerships insurance to be compensated.
Proof dumb people have too much money. Take that cash and put it in a long term investment account. Continue to make deposits to that account automatically every month. Don't let daughter know about the money. When she's an adult, judge her maturity and responsibility and decide then what to do with the money. Personal preference; buy her a sensible vehicle less than 5 years old but not new, use the rest to help with college or vocation school, then hold onto the rest for real emergencies (medical, job loss, loss of home, etc).
To pay for college? Wow. The only place a camaro has collector value is in a trailer park.
I live in a trailer park. None of my neighbors have mullets and the racial make-up is pretty even. Trucks here are generally American brands. Cars here are a wide variety with no clear majority for any make/model. Chevy, Buick, Caddy, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Lexus, BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, and Mazda are some of the car brands I see here. There are exactly one Mustang and Camaro here.
I'd be a happy camper if the dealer totaled my car. Talk about a leg up in the sales manager's office when negotiating the new lease for a '14 Azera Limited!
