Running Out of Gas - Causes More Problems?

I've run out of gas numerous times and never had any of the problems mentioned. The only problem I had was nearly dying having to trek 20 miles in the desert because I had left my cellphone at home. I still push the limits though because I am always curious to know how many miles it can go before running out of gas. But I do carry a full gas can now.
