I disagree with your comments on GAP insurance through Carmax. I have found that they are hundreds less than most insurance companies. Bottom line, do your research and choose the better of the two. Plus CarMax GAP insurance pays the gap plus deductibles. It's the best deal I've seen and they said I can cancel it anytime and get a pro-rated refund. Love CarMax! Oh and regarding flood cars...they don't sell em or anything with frame damage either. They GUARANTEE it...sounds like someone is spreading rumors. sour grapes maybe? LOL

I like Carmax as you can test drive so many different cars, all makes and models.
The one price is nice, the price is usaully fair. If you found the exact model-color-miles you were are looking for , the price is fair. If you are looking generally, say a 2010 Camry, you probably will find one cheaper someplace else.
I sold auto parts to Carmax for a few years, I can say with confidence they try to make their used cars as right as possiible.

CarMax is full retail......People don't like confrontation and CarMax has done a great job at making car buying simple and non-confrontational but still getting top dollar. AutoNation started as a CarMax then changed their business model to go after new car sales by acquiring dealerships nationwide so obviously there wasn't room in the industry for two nationwide mega used car chains (specifically selling used cars).

See post #26 for a real world example of CarMax pricing......yeah they are getting "all the money" for their used cars.

Car max is not as good as direct from owner, you still have to deal with sales tax and dealer market up. Plus they are mainly auction cars not owner trade inss

Nope not true.. PLUS they have a standard for the ones that are traded or they buy...

They run around 65/35 for owner and fleet....

Obviously, you must think EVERYONE but CarMax sells their cars for half of what CarMax does.. That isn't even possible.. If CarMax is getting "top Dollar" and they keep selling like gangbusters then everyone else is getting close to "Top Dollar" as they are also in business...

And while we are on the subject of Full Retail.... Any vehicle you buy is NEVER the same as the KBB and NADA claim.. They are always under what you have paid.. So the definition of Full Retail pertaining to cars is a misnomer...

I have 2 cars that keep going up in price or at the least staying near the price they were when new.... These are 8 & 9 yr old cars.. BUT NADA and KBB have their value undercut by about $2500 to $3000 which is not real world pricing.. PLUS they don't offer optional packages that come with the cars.. And that is almost any car... Not all cars have the basic option p[ackages... A lot fo them come with special packages but KBB and NADA don't even offer these for the pricing...

I admit it, I do like the haggling part. My wife put it in perspective for me a couple of years ago though. She asked me, "You do realize you just spent 5 hours of your life just to get $6 per month off?" On reflection, it was a waste of time!

You will pay sales tax no matter if you purchase from a dealer of a private party. No way to get out of sales tax...
Carmax does not sell auction cars, they buy cars from private sellers, and also take trade-ins.. The keep the good cars and wholesale the less desirable ones. A busy Carmax location often buys dozens of cars a day from private sellers who drive onto the lot to sell their cars. There are always several buyer specialists on duty to handle to flow of cars, sometimes as many as 30 cars a day will be purchased that way.
Many Carmax dealers hold auctions every Monday to sell off the ones they don't want. Some locations hold two auctions each Monday, morning and afternoon they have so many cars. They do huge volumes, often over a hundred cars will go in one auction.

Carmax is plain and simple a clever way to charge customers full price for used vehicles, not only that, they are more than happy to offer you less than true value on any trade-in you may have. Besides that, they will not negotiate, so, you get retail prices, less for your trade, and no chance of "working a deal", all under the guise of "we make it easy for you by not negotiating".

I wouldn't set foot in a Carmax.
