People complain about minivans, but they are the most practical vehicle out there for transporting a combination of people and cargo. If you expect to have five people in the car regularly you can figure on at least occasionally going above five, plus sports equipment and the like. In my opinion no SUV or station wagon is as good as a minivan for these purposes.
Dont get a Honda - they are reliable but all of them have transmission problems around 100k, it's a known fact! As long as you like Japaneese quality, consider Toyota instead!

Which is why we had 3 Taurus wagons over the years, real wagons, not the CUV variety.

lol, not only the "fact" is wrong but the sentence itself is conflicting.
A 2013-present Honda Accord would be a good bet, especially if you can get one fully loaded with a V6. Can't go wrong with the 2008-2012 generation either, but I'd try to get a 2010-2012 because the 2008-2009 had some brake issues. The Accord is a dream on wheels. I drive a 2011 V6 sedan, fully loaded w/GPS. The thing is a dream on wheels and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I rented a 2009 or 2010 Chevy Impala for ten days and was impressed by its ride and comfort. If I had to replace our current Chevy sedan I'd look for a used one of those years with a front bench seat. Any GM car manufactured in Canada is better than average, IMO. I like front bench seats because they can hold six people in a pinch and there's a place for the dog.
They still made a few Impalas with bench seats up until 2012.
I'm sorry if I didn't give enough specifics. There will only be five passengers at a time, and no long trips. My husband is getting a truck that will seat six, so we will use that when it's all of us and for trips. By affordable, probably under 30 thousand. Thanks for the responses!
: )
If you live in snow country, then the Subaru Outback is your car.

Can people cut it out about the Honda transmission bull? That was only a problem in 1999-2005 vehicles! If post 2005 Hondas are involved there's nothing to worry about. The only reason to talk about Honda transmission problems are in the context of 1999-2005 vehicles.
