want to hear an odd story related to this? back in 1980 i used to commute to my job by bus. right next to the bus stop was a---1971 Plymouth Sport Fury(or Gran Sedan whatever)-- with all the high level trimmings like white vinyl roof, deluxe interior (like the LTD and Caprice had) ---with a 3 on the tree.

any comments about this would be appreciated. for example, was the car a 226-6 or a 318-8. hard to imagine a 4000 car moving swiftly with the 3 on the tree and it started getting me to think did people order the LTD and the Caprice with a 3 on the tree?

When i was in the first grade my teacher had a '68 Chev Biscayne with 3 on the tree but way back then it was fairly common

rl, I would guess that car had a Slant 6, but AFIK you could get a 3-on-the-tree with a V-8. IIRC a 71 Impala base model would be a 350-2bbl and a 3-on-the-tree. Typically the dealers had brochures on this year's car model, with a table saying what transmissions were available with what engines, and sometimes also what other options were "kosher" with what. And of course in the good old days, you could get whatever ring&pinion you wanted, if it was made, from a 2.56 or so down into a 5.XX.

My first car was a 72 Gremlin with 3 on the floor with a straight 6 in it. My buddys first car was a Comet with 3 on the tree and it also had a straight 6 in it. So of course we had to race. He lost. We started out even till it was time to get into 2nd gear. My gremlin was so smooth and the comet was not so smooth. By the time he finally got into 2nd I could see him flipping me off in my rear view mirror.
