A decade ago I spent $6500 on performance parts in one sitting between three companies.
Today I'm looking at a cart with $1100 worth of parts and I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger. Maybe I'm getting old. The only reason the cart is that high is job creep. While you're in there.
My Sons and I build hot rods and right now I am building a Bantam drag altered. For a while there I had Fedex showing up every day with my slicks, American Torque Thrusts, Currie narrowed 9 inch rear, my front suspension, my four bar rear suspension, my front 10 spokes and tires, and parts for the engine.
My one Son is knee deep in a Fox Mustang drag car build, and he was saying he has more in parts recently than most people spend on a brand new luxury car.
Biggest order I've ever placed at one time was around $8k for new turbos and intercoolers. I probably spent... Oh I don't even want to think about what the total was in mods LOL.
My splurges on cars pales in comparison to some guys I know though. Some of them have dropped over $100k into modding their cars, not including the price of the car. There's a local shop that specializes in modifying GTRs, a bill there routinely gets up to the $50k level and higher for an upgrade package.
I almost ordered a factory five cobra kit a few years ago. I still may do it someday when I have some money. I'll probably need about $20k to start.
I say DO IT ! FFR is having a 50% off sale right now on options for the next 20 kits out the door.
I built one way back in 1998 and that was my biggest expenditure of auto parts to date. Back then the cars required a 1987-93 Mustang parts and the best/ cheapest way to get the needed parts was to buy a wrecked car at auction. A friend of a friend dealer of mine found a 1990 LX for me that had been roughed up in a theft but all the parts I needed were in great shape. I stripped it and sold off the parts I didn't need.
Today many guys go with new parts. It is amazing what builders are doing today plus there are so many more options that FFR has developed to make the cars safer and faster.
you can still do one on a budget but expect to pay about $20,000.
