All very true, but when someone decides to engage lots of activities that require this kind of "stuff," they need to do it with their eyes wide open regarding the total cost of engaging in these activities rather than pissing and moaning about it later. I believe that's the point everwinter was tyring to make, not that people shouldn't do these things at all.

I myself have had horses for 25 years. I wouldn't trade some of my experiences hauling them around the country and riding for anything, but there is a significant ongoing expense involved that I understand and accept. If I can't afford to go to a trail ride because the tank on the truck is empty and gas is spiking, I don't clean out my bank account to go anyway then complain about the cost; I just accept it and stay home.

I think that conversation should be separate from why people should or shouldn't own a truck. I don't know many folks who go out and buy a lot of toys just because they have a truck. At least for us, when choosing a hobby we decide if it's something we want to do, and then if it requires a truck we know that won't be an issue. If we didn't have one, we just don't get into that hobby. We definitely wouldn't go buy a truck just to do it.

But people complaining over having all these toys don't sound like they can prepare or stick to a budget very well, which is probably a conversation in one of the other forums here.

True...but in my experience I haven't heard anyone "pissing and moaning" about the understood costs of these activities. Granted that may be the point to his post and from his viewpoint. ATVs, Boats etc. all cost money for fuel and maintenance and I guess some people get caught off guard with the sunk costs of owning recreational "toys". Probably why you see so many on craigslist

When I'm ready to get busy, the woods and the deserts are not where I'm heading, thank you very much.

This is the point that I've been trying to make and that many of you are failing to see or failing to acknowledge because you view everything I say as a personal attack against you.

And to be fair here philinak, you specifically were asking me how much my truck cost, maintenance cost, etc.... Assuming that the cost of ownership and maintenance on my truck were more than a Prius or <insert your car of choice here>. That has absolutely nothing to do with people and their expensive hobbies.
