I have a Ranger, but also two cars. I suppose 50% of the time I drive it the bed is empty, but I do haul in it quite often. It's also 4WD and has a towing package and I can use it for pulling my utility trailer. I make trips to the dump, haul lumber, appliances and other large items for projects around the house. I use it for collecting trees for bonsai in the mountains on dirt forest service trails, and may drive it to work on days when it snows. Sometimes I use it to help family or friends pick up something big or to move, though that's probably the worst reason to have a truck. It really only holds two people with just little jump seats, but that's why we have two others. Mostly though, it's just fun.
Any number of reasons. Towing, carrying bicycles or dirt bikes, carrying trash, carrying supplies, off roading, versatility, etc. I don't care for trucks myself as I'm a sports car/sedan type of guy but if somebody wants a truck and can afford it, well then why the hell not.
I am trying to figure out why people decide to buy trucks over cars?
What kind of vehicle did you buy? Why did you buy that particular model? Why did you pick that color? Why did you pick that engine? Auto or manual? Why?
Well, after years of kicking myself in the arse for buying stupid suv's and sedans I've decided my next vehicle will be an Astro van or a Tacoma. What's nice about a truck (or van) is you can do just about anything. I love traveling and a truck/van allows you to live in the back savings hundreds on hotels. Just makes sense. Also no need for a bike carrier, just throw it in the back.
Try driving a car up a road like this (for reference purposes, the washout where that walking stick is, is 2 feet deep). Even in summer your car won't go here, with tire chains on I did bring my Jeep down it, and a pickup would do equally as well.

Because we live in a country that gives us great freedoms and many choices with which to exercise those freedoms and can buy what we need, want and can afford. Quite simply, "Because I can!"

Reason enough?
