I don't care that my truck gets 11 mpg city and 15 mpg highway. People who buy trucks don't buy them for gas mileage. That's the price you pay to drive something that can do so much more then a car can. And it's way more comfortable then a car is to me.
This thread is about actual calculated cost of ownership as evidenced by the title. NOT about chest thumping of "Im gonna drive what I want cause its my choice" BS. If you want to actually do the math and contribute to the thread that would be one thing. But basically poo pooing the choices of others who actually do the hard numbers is not a contribution except to the manure pile.

Kid what exactly did you just contribute here besides try to start ANOTHER argument. Go away and stop following me on the board. Get a hobby besides trolling.
Ok so I added all the maintenance items, and the cost of the cars. I subtracted the current trade in values, and then added in my insurance and gas bill (mileage/avg mpg from EPA x $4.00a gallon).
I came up with 400 a month, or 42 cents per mile for my 2008 civic and 340 a month or 36 cents per mile for my 2011 civic.
Interestingly enough, for both cars gas useage was comparable to the sum of depreciation and maintenance costs.
The difference in cost is mainly due to having blown through tires on the 2008 civic (on my third set), and paying darn near retail for it (the 2011 is still on stock tires and I saved 4k off of MSRP buying it).
No little cars here, I'm a content truck guy and I buy gas once every 3 weeks, mobil1 oil means a change every 5000 miles and insurance is LOW.

Cant help it if you are the biggest offender of going around to every thread and crapping allover it with offtopic BS. I will always call out off topic BS especially when theres absolutely no positive contribution to the spirit of the thread and OP.
Its a thread about the math of the cost of ownership. If you cant handle math dont come in to JUST SAY, "I dont care".
Bought 05 subaru : $10k @ 100k miles
Will Sell: $1k - 200k miles
Call it 7 years , 100k miles. = $9000 after selling
Insurance - $400 a year = $2800
Maintenance - $1000 a year = $7000
Fuel - 100k miles / 20mpg * $4 = $20000 (!)
.388 per mile. the gas bill is a bit of a shocker.
I was going to figure it out, but I guess not. I can guess, though.
I bought my 1990 GMC 4X4 in 1990. About $17,000 new.
Since then I have put 400,000 miles on it and the fuel alone comes to 20,000 gallons @ $2.75 = $55,000.
Bunch of regular expenses but no major repairs. Let's call it $85,000 all totaled.
I was paid mileage by a company for a six or seven years; took a tax deduction for 6 or 7 when I was self employed; sold it to a corporation that I owned but never changed title; stored it for a couple.....
I dunno; I guess I either wrote off or received $200,000 for it over the years. Figures are amazing when you look at it.
I recently decided to keep it. I was going to buy another truck, but I can put a rip-roaring 300 HP engine (came stock with 5.7 liter @ 190 HP), get the transmission rebuilt (never been done), and paint it for $8,000. And that is far, far less than I would pay for any truck that would interest me.
Well this question aroused my curiosity. So last night I sat down and using my 3x5 notebook I keep in all my cars that shows all expenses since day one (and I do mean everything, I'm an anal bookkeeper) figured out what my 76 Maverick has cost me. I bought it on 03/17/99 for $800. I included initial purchase price, insurance, tags/inspection, gas cost, repairs and maintenence, and storage shed costs for the 3 years I had it parked while I drove other cars. The total (I have driven it 43,025.8 miles since initial purchase) is.....$11,895.40! Not too bad for 15 years of ownership. Another reason I don't buy new cars. Even the cheapest new car, the Chevy Spark in base trim costs more than that new. And my Maverick even has a working AC with R12! Which the cheapest Spark does not.
Purchased a 2012 Jetta TDI new for ~$24,000 (financed significantly less)
12 Years of ownership - 144,000 miles
Insurance: $600/Year = $7,200
Maintenance $700/Year = $8,400
Fuel = 3,348 Gallons at 43 MPG = $15,066 (using $4.50/Gal for diesel)
I am sort of guestimating the current cost of my Charger... gas I would say is about $200 a month, insurance $60, and depreciation so far would be about $428 a month since I bought it (thats depreciation, I own it outright so there is no loan payment going on here). So total per month cost... $688 give or take. The figure will drop as I own it longer, and this kind of calculation would allow the amortication of that big initial depreciation out over more months. Either way, its fine by me, I really enjoy the car and have no financial regrets buying it.
