I just got a new car, a Seat Leon.. automatic.... my husand drove today about 30 miles but on our way home there was a strong smell like rubber burning, at first I thought it was street works and closed the windows but when we arrived home I noticed it was stronger... does anyone know whats causing this as its worrying..
Can you locate the smell? Smell under the hood to see if its coming from there but also check your exhaust piping (runs from the front of the car to the rear) as plastic bags or other junk can get stuck to the hot pipes and smell awful. If the car is new and the smell isn't anything obvious, take it to the dealer.
Could be normal new car smells that will go away in time, could be things like:
Stuck/sticking engine belt or pulley
Cooling system overheating
Something stuck in cabin heater system
Factory worker left their lunch in engine compartment ( don't laugh. worse has been known to happen, like pop bottle left inside door panel)
As long as you don't see smoke or fire, take back to dealer and have them check.
thanks so much for these replies.... no , no heated seats... and we checked under the bonnet.. but saw nothing.. I dont know anything about cars at all, and found the strong smell quite scary.. yep I think its going back to the dealer...
