So my daughters car- (a Crown Vic)
will shift gears, but it will not move.
Idk what the issue could be- & I hate to see someone take advantage of them with this.
Anyone have any experience with this??
Could be as simple as a disconnected / broken cable to a fried trans. I'll assume when you say it shifts gears, you mean the gear shift lever moves from park to reverse, neutral, drive, 2-1 but the vehicle don't move.
Transmission is gone. I had 2 die on me in 2 weeks, on Taurus and Sable. You looking at a solid day to DIY swap and around $800 for rebuilt trannie. Otherwise, you'll pay much more than that at a shop.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that someone who didn't already know the problem (like our OP) wouldn't really be in the DIY swap category.
They were hoping it's a
loose wire or cable.
Someone suggested it could very well be
the transmission- seriously I hope not.
If it is, I'd just have them get rid if it a.s.a.p.
And the shifter moves from drive,
reverse, etc.
The car won't, though
Another idea was to check the transmission fluid-
they don't know how.....

When a transmission is low on fluid, it will not go when you put it into gear. There is a dipstick, like the oil, usually farther back toward the firewall. It's normally checked with the engine warmed up and running. Pull it out, wipe it off, push back in all the way and then pull back out and see where the fluid is with relation to the full mark. If low by 1/4" or more, it may just need topping up. It should be a fairly bright translucent red color. if brown, or smells burned, it's more likely a bigger problem. I too have had 3-4 automatics die, and usualy it goes, but slips. In other words, the engine revs high but the car moves slowly. Have them ask friends in the area for recommendations for a good, honest mechanic. A rebuild on that transmission would be in the area of $3,000 but it could be a cheaper, easier fix.
Thanks for the replies-
I've been relaying all this info to them.
I may have to go check the
transmission fluids myself lol
And finding an honest mechanic
is like finding a needle in a haystack sometimes.
If the shifter moves but the transmission don't engage in gear cup heck and see if the linkage or shift cable came loose or broke/snapped at the transmission or at the shifter. It may not be a bad trans.
