Honestly, I can't tell you exactly why I am not a huge fan. Maybe it's all the rice boys that think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread? I don't think that's it. Rice boy's love Supra's, and I have owned a couple of those, and like them.

Perhaps it's because it's too easy to drive fast? I like more effort/involvement? I think that's more of the issue.

So, while I admire the technology, and respect how fast it is straight off the showroom floor. I would personally not purchase one.
I'm in the same boat as you. I can respect what the engineers have done with the car. I think it's amazing how good it handles and feels considering its weight.

The styling... has never clicked with me. But, I was never a fan really of the old versions either. They were ok. Cars like the Supra, 3000GT, 300ZX, NSX, and 3rd gen RX7 looked infinitely better to me than the old Skylines.

I think it's the background of the car that has put me off a bit. The previous Skylines were not available here, and because of that, they were seen as mysterious and more desirable. They were exotic. Now though, if you want a GTR, you trot on down to your local Nissan dealership and have them order you one while you sit in a chair right next to the bland, boring Altima on the showroom floor behind you. It's lost the brand cachet that the older Skylines had, definitely.

The GTR needed to stir the soul in addition to kicking ass, unfortunately. And most people who have spent a lot of time in a GTR say it doesn't do that. It's one of those intangible things that is hard to measure. A Lamborghini Countach has it. A Porsche 930 turbo has it. The GTR just doesn't.

He did indeed drive an R34. His big trick was his impeccable pedal control and ability to drift with the R34 even with the supposedly "undriftable" ATTESA 4WD system, hence the name "god foot". He also tended to talk a lot as he raced to distract himself from concentrating too much. One thing he talked about while he raced was how disappointed he was with the R33, so much so that he sold it and bought another R32 instead.

I don't really want to be a stickler here, but I do want to clear up a slight misconception.

The technically correct term for the older sports cars we're referring to here is not "Skyline", but rather "Skyline GT-R". The Nissan Skyline was (and continues to be) a lineup of normal family sedans and coupes, and the Skyline GT-R was the top-of-the-line model homologated for Group A racing. In fact, we've actually had many thousands of normal Skylines in this country for well over a decade: they were/are sold here as the Infiniti G35, G37, and Q50.

In street racing parlance, if we're to go by Initial D, the chassis designations "R32", "R33", and "R34" can be used alone to refer to each generation of Skyline GT-R, even though the designations technically refers to that generation's entire Skyline lineup and not just the Skyline GT-R alone. In other words, you don't have to refer to an R32 as "R32 GT-R". I'm guessing that this because nobody would ever use a normal Skyline to race on the touges or Wangan Expressway. And if we're to believe Initial D, street racers only refer to their cars by their chassis designations and not their given model name, and would never call their car "Skyline" or "Skyline GT-R".*

So why do many of us continue to mistakenly refer to the "Skyline GT-R" as simply "Skyline"? I think the biggest reason is that we've never actually had a car sold under the Nissan Skyline name in the US and many other countries, so it's a rather meaningless name to us. We probably shortened the correct term for the sports car to just "Skyline" (or even "GT-R", in some cases) to make saying it less of a mouthful, and those who only know of the Skyline GT-R and not the regular Nissan Skyline simply followed suit.

Overall, regardless of whether it's correct or not, we don't care which term we use because "Skyline", "Skyline GT-R", and "GT-R" all sound equally exotic to our ears. That's why we have no problem referring to the sports car as the "Skyline", even though it would be weird for us to refer to a Honda Civic Si as only the "Civic", or a VW GTI as only the "Golf, or a Ford F-150 Raptor as only the "F-150".

And finally, even though the new Nissan GT-R is referred to as the "R35 GT-R" or "R35", it would be absolutely dead wrong to refer to it as a "Skyline", "Skyline GT-R", or "R35 Skyline" because it's no longer based on the Skyline chassis and body. You could conceivably call the R32, R33, and R34 as just "Skyline" and still be somewhat correct because they were actually based on the regular Skyline coupe, but you can't do this with the R35.

* Don't go by my word here. I'm only basing this info on a manga/anime series, one that tries to make us believe that an old AE86 Trueno can regularly beat suped-up RX-7s and Skyline GT-Rs in mountain pass street races, and that many street racers use drifting as their preferred technique to achieve their best race times.

Good research thanks! I'm not a big technical guy, if it looks good and goes fast and handles well that's good enough for me.

Has anyone researched what's different on the 2015 GT-R? I'm considering a purchase after my test drive the other day. I haven't had much time to do any reading on the newer '15... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically just a softer suspension, no additional power added, new headlights, etc.

Doesn't matter which kind of performance car you prefer but to get the most thrill out of your ride you must drive it on a real road course track. The interstate is just for getting there.

My favorite places to play.
