Weird thread. The OP belittles drivers who choose a V6 or V8, yet he is probably filling up more often in a year than 95% of the people in this thread with his 600+ mile desert runs.
You know very well you weren't "asking for insight"
You said "What is so magical about this SUV that it has be 6,000 pounds, no more and no less, for just 5 adults and 4 dogs?"
You weren't simply asking a question with your condescending tone. You obviously have a problem with his choice and freedom to buy what he wants.
"You know very well you weren't 'asking for insight'"?
Really?
So now you can read my mind?
In the first place, my question was not directed at you, so I'm not moved by your mock indignation. Go find someone who cares.
In the second place, the poster never responded to my question, which indicates to me that it's probably not so much that he/she NEEDS a 6,000 pound SUV but, more truthfully, just WANTS a 6,000 pound SUV and that's his/her right.
I just ask that he/she be more honest and forthright about it.
Most four bangers today are as powerful as V8's from the 70's and 80's. Sad to say, but my Sonata can nearly outrun my '87 Trans Am GTA.
LOL…I was thinking about this earlier today. Many of the current boring, sedate-looking 'family sedans' would outrun some of the muscle cars from yesteryear. I had an old '75 Chevy Nova with a 350 4-barrel engine that I thought was a fast car (and it was at the time). And although it wasn't technically a muscle car (post-1971 muscle cars were all but gone), it still had a lot of power and quickness for a post-catalytic converter/smog engine. But the V-6 Accords and Camrys and Altimas of today would blow it out of the water -- and many of the 4 cylinders would probably outrun it! LOL….

A little late to this thread (obviously) and I can't speak to their needs but 6,000 pounds is the 'magical' number for Section 179 deductions.
It's the infamous "SUV loophole". I'm self-employed and know 179 well.

Limits for SUVs or Crossover Vehicles with GVWR above 6,000lbs
Certain vehicles (with a gross vehicle weight rating above 6,000 lbs but no more than 14,000 lbs) qualify for expensing up to $25,000 if the vehicle is financed and placed in service prior to December 31 and meet other conditions.
Having a heavier vehicle is actually good in some places. In WY for example, it's pretty darn windy and the extra weight is good to keep a vehicle staying solid and planted on the road.
