He has older Kia with 80K miles on it--found out it needs about 2K of work--

says 20K is top he can afford...

suggestions for reliable, safe (he drives a lengthy commute at least 3 days a week), and fairly comfortable?

For around $20k, he could find a good CPO Accord with many features in it, that would be a safe, comfortable, and reliable vehicle, with very good resale value, should he want to trade/upgrade at some point.

Honda Civic
Toyota Corolla

Both are very reliable, get decent gas mileage, and cost below $20,000.

I just saw an ad for a new 2014 Honda Civic for $16.9k which is amazing.

I have a 2013 Civic and it's very comfortable. I often drive 8 hours non-stop and never had any body aches like I used to in previous cars. It's also one of the safest cars on the market as it received the prestigious IIHS Top Pick + rating. It's been very reliable so far.

Even the entry level Civic comes fully loaded with many standard features like Bluetooth, Rear-view camera, Pandora streaming, Text Message Function, Auto up/down power window, tilt/telescope steering wheel, Keyless entry, A/C, Steering mounted controls and even a standard alarm.

2010-2012 Ford Fusion V6 AWD or a 2003-09 4th Gen Subaru Legacy they will have more room and be more comfortable on longer commutes and still be great in the city as well as have AWD.
