The simple formula I use is to buy what I like and can afford. The fact is no matter what you buy you are supporting the American economy and American jobs. Obviously some more than other but, even with a pure import there are dealer employees and part suppliers plus numerous independent shops that make a living working on them.
I'm done with American cars. Each time I've given them a chance they let me down. The American auto industry really screwed the consumer during the 70's and 80's making some really awful cars. Even if their cars are better today I won't chance it or give them my money again. Besides, most Toyotas and Hondas are made here anyway, so you are still supporting the American worker while getting a better product.
Please reread my post? He said he strictly buys foreign even in a thread where all is equal. Therefore, he has set himself above fellow countrymen, and is exactly what he claims he does not want to be! Think about it?
I was raised in a family of steelworkers. I went to college thanks to the United Steelworkers of America. I've always purchased American-branded cars my entire life, as my parents did. I'm not naive enough to think that these cars were all made by union labor and/or contained all America-made parts. But I do what small thing I can to make jobs for Americans. Other than my home, cars are the most expensive thing I've ever purchased. I'm driving a Chevrolet at present. My last car was a Ford.
All things being equal would you buy a foreign, or domestic car, and why?
Domestic. I like them and the designs better, regarding mechanical aspects of the drivelines/suspensions and motors.
Also, I get more for my money. With an import, you buy import fees + the vehicle. Domestic, you just buy the vehicle, so, more money for a vehicle vs. taxes.
I buy what I like for the right price with no preference to where the car comes from. I just hope you guys aren't like some people I've seen, who see a nice foreign car and vandalize it by spray painting "get an American" car.
Every vehicle I buy is chosen on a case by case basis. I do not care about country of origin, either of the brand or the factory. I also don't believe in brand loyalty. That is just a silly concept to me. I am loyal to people, not companies.
I have never owned a Chrysler product, because there hasn't been one I wanted at the time. My parents owned a Chrysler Concord.
I have never owned a GM product, for the same reason. The only GM product that has interested me is a Corvette. My parents have owned GM cars.
I have owned several Fords. Several Mazdas. Several Hondas. A few Nissan. A Jaguar. An Infiniti. An Acura.
