The car is huge. It sits 3 in the back comfortably.
I would not qualify it as huge, at least not the S that I have driven. The problem is cargo capacity, as the OP will need a stroller, and room for "stuff" that seems to accumulate in the cargo area, especially as a road trip vehicle. With the infrastructure under construction, the range could also be a factor, depending upon where they wish to travel. As a family car, it is a good option, but as a principal family hauler, it would be a bit cramped, especially with luggage and such. With the seats up, you only have 8.1 cubic feet of cargo space, while with the seats down it is 66 cubic feet. 8.1 is not going to be enough for any trip outside of one's own town with a family of five.

For the OP, when you look for the commuter car (instead of the family cargo), keep in mind that the Chevrolet Cruze & Buick Verano are a Vauxhall Astra with fewer engine choices. The Chevrolet Malibu & Buick Regal are Vauxhall Invicta. The Chevrolet Impala, Buick Lacrosse, & Cadillac XTS are longer and wider Vauxhall Invicta.
Lets get back to this statement..... If my calculations are right from all the UK shows I watch, that's almost $362 US Dollars to fill it up. Is that right???
Something's wrong somewhere.
Silverado/Sierra 1500 comes with a 26 gallon tank. At $4/USGallon, that's $104.
2500HD/3500HD have a 36 gallon tank. That's $144.
Those kids aren't going to get smaller as they get older. I'd suggest at least looking at the Silverado/Sierra twins, Crew Cab. If you are interested in caravanning, consider either a 1500 or 2500HD; a 3500HD will pull most fifth wheels.

Nothing's wrong. Remember, the GBP is worth more than the USD. £215 does in fact = $362. Additionally, petrol is closer to $7/$8 in the UK.

None of your suggestions are available in diesel are they?
The 3-series wagon is available in diesel form (328d x drive).
OP, if we had 3 kids we'd most certainly have a minivan; probably the Chrysler. But we don't, so we have an XC90 for hauling our twins and their gear. Our XC has a 3rd row but it's virtually useless.
Probably an SUV - my husband thinks grand jeep Cherokee but I've read lots of reports of unreliability so I'm wanting to research other SUVs to find a more reliable and faster alternative.
I should also mention that if your criteria are "fast" and "SUV" they don't come much faster than a
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8!
One last pitch for the Suburban - your family could christen it the "Queen Mary" and when you go on a cross country road trip to Long Beach, "Californayea" you can park and take a picture of your Queen Mary in front of the real Queen Mary. (You could also stay in the onboard hotel and enjoy the buffet)
You could almost park a "Smart Car" in the rear cargo area of the Suburban.
LOL at the Mustang idea. We had a British or Scottish family on our street for a few years. Mom had a typical minivan for hauling the kids, while dad had a Mustang GT convertible. He had the top down much more often than any of the wimpy Americans around here!
