So long as it sold more than expectiations, it was a success. Or are you saying that Ferraris, Astons, and Porshes 911s are failures too?

Japanese taxpayers did. For the same reasons, in the same timeframe.

Add to that the draconian protection that the japanese governemnt gave Toyota and Nissan in tehir home country, with ultra high tarrifs on imported cars, and you get a situationthat the gevernmetn of Japan was instrumental in Toyota's success, all the way back to 1958 when Toyota started exporting cars to the US.

It's what governments tend to do for their big manufacturing companies, in order to keep the national GDP up.

Personally, I vote FOR having them, and I hope all the mess GM and Toyota have had in the last few years encourages other manufacturers to do the same. As the consumer, it's bad enough to have purchased a vehicle with defects but it's even worse when the manufacturer buries their head in the sand.

Since the Government is going crazy on the manufacturers, I'm sure Mitsubishi and Chrysler will take a major hit soon.

Kind of interesting that the fines levied against these companies goes into the governments pocket and in turn Toyota and now GM will have to raise the price of their product to the consumer.

The other interesting point is GMs recalled column mounted ignition switch is really not much different than any other manufacturer

The Lawyers love this stuff

I saw a preview of a show that MSNBC was doing a investigative piece on GM and it's recalls and I believe it was the CEO or someone high up that made some bs quote about when they knew about it they brought it forward. I promise you they knew about it years ago and just hoped nothing would come of it. GM is not alone, car companies pull this all the time.

GM has had multiple CEO since their collapse. Why would any of them cared if they knew the problems and had their golden parachute ready for them. Which is why I would argue rewarding any CEO with a golden parachute, it should always be tied to stock and a set vesting period to avoid all these CEOs that crash and run.

The goummints divesture of GM stock right before the string of recalls makes one wonder about the possibility of some insider trading, and who would be more aware of upcoming recalls than the government that orders them?

Normal folks, even 1%r's like Martha Stewart go to jail for that stuff.

GM apologists, keep it coming though. It's always good for a laugh.

I think the real thing is the numbers and that they had known about them for some time. obvious once caught they rushed to address others they had ignored otherwise. This has ben going on since the 70's when they started to go down hill and why they loss customers to other makes.
