As a mechanic, I couldn't care less; cars and trucks will still have to be serviced. However, most of the drivers that I work with won't be thrilled by the prospect of a computer replacing them.
All I can say is from is the future for automobiles looks pretty damn bleak.
No more lift throttle over steer, heel toe shifting, the smell of burnt dinosaurs, burnt rubber, etc. One can now hop in something that belongs in Disney Land and be carted to your destination while you instagram photos of a rich life with no risk. About the only dangerous things these hipsters do is try out some new Indian restaurant with a strange IPA beer.
Fleets of driverless cars roaming the street. People driven cars are banned from streets. No more people going 60 in a 35. Sounds dreamy to me. Less humans driving the better. We can then move to charged roads, digital displays, floating freeways. Looks good.
- I'd feel safer having these on the road instead of vehicles entirely operated by humans. These cars have a backup brake and steering system in case 1 fails. Also, from one article
- Also, to add to the safety element the max speed is 25 mph with a plastic windshield and foam in the front of the car.
- The cars in the video look very nice, comfortable, and practical. I haven't seen the BMW or Toyota cars yet.
- I love the idea of getting in a car & getting time to read or relax similar to when I'm on the bus minus the massive congestion.
- Bring them on. The sooner, the better.
Not me. None of this sounds appealing and there are too many things to go wrong. Maybe if the car was on a road just for driverless cars, but to mix with cars driven by humans sounds like a disaster. 25 mph limit might be fine in a heavily congested area, there are maybe a tiny fraction of one percent of areas even in large cities where 25 mph is appropriate as a top speed. Also, while I know humans make mistakes and run into the back of cars all the time, this video of the Volvo automatic brake testing always makes me laugh and gives me pause.
Driver less cars are nothing new, we have had them for years ever since the advent of the cell phone.
