That doesn't make any sense at all. But tell your insurance agent to deal with it. That's what they're for.

I had an '07 Honda Civic that got wrecked in '09. Around 50k miles on it. 35 MPH front end crash, airbags deployed, and mild front end damage. As one poster mentioned, though, it's a unibody car (basically, the body and frame are all one piece -- versus a "body on frame" vehicle, like a truck or SUV, where the body components are separate from the "frame" that the engine and drivetrain bits are attached to). Unibody cars with frame damage are usually considered total loses, because it's incredibly hard to rebuild and maintain structural integrity. I'd just accept the loss and go buy another one.

As for the body shop taking the car apart and wanting to charge you for it... What it sounds like to me is they gave an estimate on what it would cost to repair what they could see (for example: hood, bumper, fenders, lights...). When they started to dig into the car and check out the damage, they found more stuff that needed repair (punctured radiator, frame damage, etc) -- which doubled their estimate.

Like eevee said, let insurance handle it. That's what it's there for.

I recently had a similar age/miles pickup with no body damage, no glass damage go to the boneyard after a front collision. Nose got hit hard, airbag blew and the math was bad on putting it back together.
What? I can get airbags for around $100.00. OEM spec.

Let your insurance company total the car. Buy it back if you want to keep it.

Did you sign anything authorizing the work? How did the car get there? Call your insurance agent ASAP.

Did they do a free estimate? Was it submitted to your insurance? Did they authorize the work?

Used airbags are way cheap, don't buy new.

Probably, but without seeing pictures or an estimate from the body shop, it's just an educated guess. The repair expense goes up substantially with airbag deployment.
