I admit I am a bit addicted to them, just the utter stupidity and complete lack of common driving sense is mind boggling- going 70mph on a sheet of ice passing multiple trucks with trucks coming at you and totally ignoring all traffic signals. And then there are the mafia gangs and perpetrators of insurance fraud. I don't think I would ever get in a car in Russia or Ukraine.
I think it's mandatory that everyone has a dash cam in Russia.
Not really "mandatory", but it's encouraged. Insurance providers in Russia are notorious for not wanting to pay out. As well, there's a lot of insurance scams. People will jump on the hood of your car while you're stopped, then claim you ran them down. Or the guy in front of you will throw his car in reverse, back into you, then claim you rear ended him.
By having a dash cam, you've got video proof of what happened / who's at fault.
What makes them great is Russian's general attitude towards the ridiculous. Like when that meteor struck in Siberia a few months back -- several dash cams captured it, but nobody sounded excited or anything. It's just "Oh, hey, look at that."
Unbelievable! I again notice that they don't know how to brake or use mirrors. Campare this to American drivers in one of the worst cities to drive in:
