I am itching to replace my 2010 Terrain with a new and loaded Terrain or Equinox. But for several reasons it would be better for me to wait until late July. I have heard that the 2015's might be available by then. While I obviously could get a better deal on a 2014, even now I am having trouble finding one I like. By July the selection will be even less. Also purchasing a 2014 that late in the year means I will be driving off the lot with a year old vehicle.

What to do?? Suggestions?

GM typically shuts down their plants for 1 to 2 weeks at the beginning of July, which is time used for the model year changeover. So I doubt you will see a big influx of inventory at the dealer until some time after that.

Dealers would be able to take a factory order on a 2015 now. Why not just order one to your specification?

Replacing your relatively new (as in 21 years newer than the car I drive 40 miles every day) vehicle with something you don't really want just for the sake of replacing it would be ridiculous. Yes, you can get good deals on remaining 2014 models when the 2015 models come out, but if you don't really like what's available there's really no point.

I'd keep looking at 2014s as you run across them in case you find something you like, otherwise wait for the 2015s. If you do find a 2014 you like, don't let the fact that it's essentially last year's model at this point turn you off. It's still a new car. But if the idea of it having a few miles on it due to multiple test drives is going to bother you then stop looking at them.

You might be surprised at how little the older model is discounted when the new ones come out. A real deal can only be had at those dealers that run out of room for the new model due to the piled up inventory of the previous year. The absolute best time to by, if you can wait, is between Christmas and New Year's Day, preferable on 12/30 or 12/31. Dealers experience very slow sales, and are anxious to raise their numbers for the year and boost the next year's allocation by selling a few more. Better yet if there has been a snowstorm that week. I have done this twice and saved $6-7,000 off sticker with very little haggling.

I know this is plain stupid and silly, but I am a gadget/tech guy. I am also retired and bored. My wife recently purchased a 2013 Malibu LTZ and I fell in love with all the newer tech.

If that's the case I'd wait for the 2015 to come out, if only to see if there's anything available that's not on the '14. If not there should still be a decent selection of '14 models to choose from for a few months although you might have to travel a little to see much variety.

Default New Vehicle Purchase Timing

If you're able to wait, Feb - March is the best time to buy normally. It's the doldrums at dealerships and they're more likely to be eager to sell at a better price.

If money's not a consideration, just wait a few weeks and get the new 2015.

Just a few thoughts to consider

(1) Unless your going to keep the next vehicle for a few years
and if your financing it a 2014 will not be an issue.

(2) If your not in a big hurry see what the 2015 is all about

(3) If by chance your leaning more to a 2014, Check the invoice date
sometimes you'll beat a mid year price increase, but this is moot if it does
not have the equipment and features your looking for have your dealer
run a 'LOCATE' there just might be what your looking for in a smaller town
then you might be able to work out something with your dealer on acquiring
the vehicle that best meets your needs.

Happy Hunting !

Another note/personal observation (excuse): I use to keep my new cars for 7 to 10 years. That was when the only difference between an older car and a new one was styling and the new car smell. However new technology offerings, safety options and gas mileage improvements make it expeditious to consider a new purchase every three years or so. Or maybe I am a just sucker for how the car companies are marketing and they have hooked me.......
