Why order a steak when you can eat a burger for cheaper?

2 reasons come to mind.

I usually request the cheapest car out there. 9/10 times, I usually get something bigger but pay the econo car price. Busy time, they tend to run out of cars & give you whatever is left. I once got a convertible in Vegas during slow winter months.

Upgrade points. Frequent travelers easily get upgraded. Once you get into the gold or platinum club or whatever....you get the royal treatment.

Same here. At home I may have a "family car" because that is more practicable. But when traveling, I might "splurge" a bit and rent something fun.

For example a Mercedes two door convertible sports car is fun to drive, but try packing 3 passengers in it or going to Home Depot with it (an SUV or pick-up works better for those things).

I always get a midsize or larger rental car, but the price difference between that and a compact isn't big. The difference between what I get and a "Fancy" car is double.

Because it is their choice and their money to spend driving whatever rented vehicle they choose.
This would be the same reason people spend the money they earn on what they want, it is their choice not yours.
