Been looking at used SUV's lately and see ads on Cars.com avertising that they are certified as well as showing that they are certified on the Carfax. However, when you go to the dealer, they tell you that the car has been "pre-certified" and that is the price advertised. If you want it to be certified, it will cost you $800+ to certify it.

Have any of you seen this - my thinking is that if they are going to advertise the car as certified, then the price should reflect that and there shouldn't be an up charge and if it is pre-certified, it should say that in the ad with the option to certify. Otherwise, every time you see a certified car, you have to call the dealer to find out if the car is "really certified." Likewise, if it says on the carfax that the car is certified and if someone chose not to pay the extra cost, the carfax would be inaccurate for future buyers.

Has this happened to you?

I would think by pre-certified they mean it has passed the inspections that are required but the cost is for the warranty coverage that makes it different from the exact same model at another dealer that cannot certify it.
