I know a lot of people like to negotiate "out the door" price but I never do due to our sales tax. Since it's value is dependent on the sale price, I rather work on the sale price and it will be 8.75% more on that.

Seems to work well when working with dealers too.

I find negotiating a deal when a trade is involved to be far more challenging than worrying whether the price is OTD or just the vehicle price. When your working with a trade, you have two vehicles with a value and makes it far easier for the dealer to shift figures without lowering transaction price. Here, OTD may be more valuable.

there is no hard and fast rule on how much you can get off the car.
it all depends on the exact car you're getting,the supply and demand for it and your negotiating skills.in 2014 there really is no reason to ever get swindled on a new car.
