I've posted a few cars on CL before and I've always ended up selling it when someone saw the "for sale" sign. There are rarely people on there that are truly buying a car, the people on there just looking for really good deals. I posted a old Toyota pickup on CL for $500 and instantly got emails, but I posted a 2010 Chevy work van and it was a few weeks before someone contacted me and brought the van the next day.
Yeah, selling cars online is mega stressful. Anytime I set an appointment I usually assume there's a 50/50 chance the dude will even show up. If the prospective buyer has cash in hand, there's a high chance I'll sell it on the spot if it's within 10%~ of my original asking price.
Mechanical issues are generally fixed by your hobbyist. Body and rust issues are not. Generally, your hobbyist can troubleshoot mechanical issues along with electrical issues via the internal or mechanics books. Body work and rust repair isn't easily corrected. (Of course we here on C-D do not know the extent of the body and rush issues since no pictures have been posted) I would say that most hobbyists will have to leave body repair/rust repair to the professionals which is not cheap at all. Probably the same reason you haven't repaired these issues yourself.
Fact is, your 6K value on the car is too high and this is the reason it hasn't sold.
It is a buyers market and as such, if you want to see real interest, lower your price. Because clearly no one else thinks it is worth what you think it is.
If so you have an ad with a price of $5800 on 8-18 and an ad dated 8-20 for $7300.
That throws up a red flag right there.
The same ad mentions rust. I don’t know much about Lincolns, but it’s my understanding the bodies on these cars are pretty complex for the period.
The picture presentation of the car is pretty **** poor and sloppy, but that doesn’t surprise me. I don’t understand why people don’t take the time to stage better pictures when selling a car.
I sold a wrecked 10 year old GMC pickup in one week (coincidentally the week between Christmas and New Years) on Craigslist. Truck was drivable but had a blown airbag. Lots of dumb texts, like "will you take $500" but 2 people came to see it and the 2nd person paid me cash and took it away. Asking $1900 and got full price. Between the insurance check and the end sale I got more than the truck was worth in perfect shape!
CL can be a good avenue for the right car/truck at the right price point.
Those rust spots will be VERY hard to fix. Most looking for that type of car should already know that and that is probably why it's sitting. Get some quotes to see how much.
