I have a 94 Mazda Protege, which has developed a rumbling vibration in the left front wheel when braking from above 45 mph. I'm thinking maybe warped rotor? Anyone care to guess?
Could be so many things, sticky caliper, wheel bearing starting to go? Did you recently drive through a deep puddle on that side? If so if the rotor was hot it could easily warp a little, just enough to cause a little noise. Even something like a tire out of balance by hitting a curb or bad pothole could cause a noise.
Well I've not hit anything with it, or driven through water with hot rotors. If I had both of them would be doing it, and it's only the left front. A bad bearing sounds possible, or a bad CV joint. I think if the rotor was warped I'd be feeling it in the brake pedal, but I don't. It just started doing this about a week ago.
Take a look at your CV joints.. if you see grease on the outside of the CV joint boots, they need replacement. Worn spring pin bushings can also cause a clunking or popping sound when you turn your wheel.
Well I do hear a low rattling noise on left turns, so yeah, maybe it's the CV joint. Whatever it is it's bad news, I can't afford a fix right now.
FWD cars are finicky, especially little ones. I would tuck away a month's salary for car emergencies, more if you can. Can you buy a $1K car tomorrow if you had to? It may not be pretty but will get you from A to B cheaper than renting/leasing.
