Our Volvo wagon is on it's last legs and we are looking for a replacement - BUT - considering our upcoming move to Charleston one with better A/C than our Volvo.

We have a 55 lb. Coonhound who has breathing issues, so we need room for her hard crate AND great A/C.

We drove a Honda CRV today and were sorely disappointed. We actually put the seats down and I rode in the cargo area way in the back and it was HOT. My husband said the front wasn't that great either.

We also drove a FIT, and although it was better because it is a smaller car, but it was not that much better, so Honda is off the list.

My car has great A/C but is too small. I have a Fiat 500 which I absolutely adore. I had to take the back seats out to fit Abby's crate, but it's too small for hubby since the front seats have to be pushed up so far.

We'll only have one car, so it will have to work for both of us. The CRV was about as big (bigger actually) that I would prefer to drive.

Since you all live where it is HOT as blazes in summer, can anyone recommend a good fit? On our list are Toyota RAV4, Subaru Outback, Subaru Crosstrek, but I've heard these are also "marginal". I like A/C so cold it freezes you out. Someone told us Fords are better. Anyone own any of these?

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

I'm surprised you're not happy with the Honda CRV. I just bought a new one and love the AC. I usually only have to keep the maximum level on for about 5 minutes after my car has been sitting in the sun all day.

I was recently given a 13 Outback (base model) by a family member who can no longer drive and I was about to put it up for sale on autotrader. I only mention it cause after driving it around for a couple of weeks the AC was ice cold, even during the crazy heat wave we recently had ... that said I can only speak for the front seat cause I never sat anywhere else in it.

As far as what vehicle you should consider, it's going to be hard to make recommendations unless we know your budget.

Oh... budget! Yes, that.

We'll be leasing, because don't want to tie up capital or be tied to a car. But the base price we are looking at is less than 25K MSRP.

We are now looking at hatchbacks. Thinking they offer a smaller cabin to cool, plus cargo space. Better on gas mileage. My car is a hatch and I love it. Looking at Ford Focus SE, Mazda 3, and Volkswagon Golf.

Thanks for the info/recommendations!

I would take a look at a Volkswagen Golf/GTI or a Passat wagon. They both have rear vents and plenty of room in the back for your pup when you lay the rear seats down. I have a 70lb lab who loves my GTI. Plus 30mpg and over 40mpg with the diesel versions!

Will check out the Audi, as well as the others, thanks.

Lizardspock, what is the difference between the Golf and GTI? Both get great reviews, and I didn't know they had back vents - that's perfect. Is the GTI just a souped up verson of the Golf? There are some great lease deals now around here on Golfs.

That is correct. The GTI is the sporty version of the golf. Bigger engine, more power, better transmission, large wheels, lots of tech goodies on the inside and of course more expensive. The GTI doesn't come with a diesel option but the Golf does.

Take them out for a spin. Good luck.
