I was perusing Craigslist the other day, searching specifically for cars with manual transmissions (not that I need another car, but you never know what you might find). There were a few of them that claimed the car had a manual transmission, yet were quite obviously automatic. They either showed pictures of the shift lever, or they were cars that the manufacturer doesn't even make with a manual transmission.

What gives? Do people seriously not know the difference?

I find a lot of errors on Craigslist car ads. Some trivial, some not. Even car dealers make some pretty serious errors in their ads.

I don't let it bother me.

Were they examples where the auto had a "manual" shift feature?

I've had bad experiences with buyers also. I put up an ad on CL with at least over 20 pictures. Guy calls me up and asks what color the car was....

When I have advertised cars for sale, my ads always mentioned the color, the model year, the type of transmission, and the odometer mileage--in addition to the model and the asking price. And yet, many callers would ask...What color is it?...What year is it?...Does it have an automatic transmission?...How many miles on it?

It was very difficult to restrain myself from telling these fools to just re-read the plain language of the ad, but restrain myself I did in order to keep people as potential buyers.
But--guess what?
In every case, the clueless ones on the phone were the same ones who never showed up for their appointment to see the car.

I'm not surprised.

I have come to look at a car advertised to have a 6-cyl engine to actually have a 4-cyl. A manual as an auto and vice versa. It's so bad that, nowadays for a GM car, I just ask the VIN number and then I pull the GM VIS. I go by the information in it instead of seller's account.

The eye doctor I went to once told me a story of how he went from IL to OH to look at a Corvette. Asked the guy if it was a manual transmission and the seller says yes. He shows up and it was the paddle shift. He went back to IL pretty upset.

Still some fault of his in the sense that he didn't get enough pictures but still.

The last car we sold on CL was a manual. It was stated as such in the ad, there was a pic of the dash with the shift knob showing as well. Had a couple people come out to look at it that seemed surprised that it was a manual and couldn't test drive the car because they didn't know how to drive stick.

Yep. Had them ask what color, what year, how many miles, etc. when all were prominently listed in the add.

I think it's just a clue to how truly out of touch a lot of people are. What is it? Distracted by so much input? On drugs? Sleep walking? Impossible to say. But it surely is frustrating.
