So I am lame, if you don't like this thread, move along. Let me enjoy reading every one else's experience or their bs story, who cares.
This is the Internet, its also an auto forum. It's entertaining.
The question was the legit, some of the response was legit. From my own experience, I can tell who's been there in what vehicle..

Now let me grab a beer with this popcorn.

I meant to type. This is gonna be interesting.

I usually follow speed limits within 5 miles, but I accidentally got up to 90 once when I was driving on I-94. The car I was driving did not have cruise control. I was just cruising along. It didn't seem very fast, but I was shocked when I looked at the speedometer. Thank G-d, there was no state patrol car around!

Fastest on public roads would be about 165ish, in both a car and a sportbike. Sportbike was topped out, car was not.

I've gone nearly 200 in road racing, but the roads are closed to the public during those.

115 mph, Merritt Parkway in CT. 1973 Pontiac T37. Might've been able to get to 120+ but alignment was off and I thought the car was going to come apart :-)

140mph in a BMW 535i. 1992 on the Alligator Alley in Florida between Naples and Ft Lauderdale. It was a straight line that cut through the Seminole reservation. There was a tribal gas station half way across about 90 miles of pure straightaway with no other exits.
I wouldn't do now because ,"The Man" is a lot more aggressive these days giving tickets and doing everything to coerce cash except deporting illegal aliens.

The fastest I've gone on a public road is about 105 mph. I live in a congested area and don't do very many long driving trips, so there's only limited opportunity to go much past 90 mph. On the other hand, when I drive on the highway, I consistently go in the 80-90 mph range if traffic and weather conditions allow it. I got a ticket for speeding last year, but that doesn't really faze me. As long as I don't accumulate too many tickets too quickly, I'm not bothered by the occasional roadside encounter with the men in blue.

I went 125 in a BMW 323i. Was it worth it? Yeah, I ended up getting to work on time and didn't get fired..
