Why do some makes have the fill on the left and some on the right? GM (as far as ive seen) puts their fill on the right. Advantage is you don't hit your car door when getting out to pump. Other makes put the fill on the left. Advantage is shorter walk to fill. With so many service stations having multiple pumps, wouldn't it be easier and efficient if all makes and models put the fill on either the left or the right? Most Nissan vehicles I saw had the fill on the left but I saw an Infiniti (part of Nissan) with a fill on the right. How does an automaker decide on fuel fill location?

Depends on the design of the car, and where they want it, personally, I like the old behind the plate location, centralized, and convenient. Some cars have a slightly offset tank, or in case of pick up trucks, it's on one side completely. I've never thought about this, I just figured it was what was.

German cars are always on the right side.

My 73 Mustang has it in the rear center. Makes it real easy when pulling in for which side of the pump.

...And dangerous.

I had a co-worker several years ago who had a close call when gassing up his vintage Plymouth Fury at a self-serve gas station. He finished filling his tank, and started walking towards the cashier's booth, when BAM! A lady rear-ended his car in the process of trying to pull up to the pump behind him!

In countries where people drive on the right, the gas fill belongs on the left side. It is natural for people to pull up on the right side of the pump.

Years ago, Consumer Reports had one of their jousting at windmills campaigns where they kept saying the gas fill should be on the right. It had something to do with collision locations. But I ask, which do you do more, fill up with gas or get into collisions?

Never really bothered me that they make it on both sides. And I agree with nylonggamer that it may help with traffic flow.

What did bug me was not knowing which side when driving different cars. Until a buddy of mine clued me in on the fact that the gas gauge will tell you which side. Over 25 years of driving, and I only realized that 22 years in...

Yeah, I always wondered what that arrow was for ...

Where the fuel opening is depends on the car's design. My Mazda 3 fuels from the passenger side.

European cars don't show it, but then you know it is on the right.

I do make good use this arrow since I get to rent a lot of cars and they could be either side (since most rentals are US/Japan/Korea made).
