A friend of mine had a VW Tiguan - he told me it was the worse auto purchase experience he ever had as it had so many electrical issues it was ridiculous. He ended up getting rid of it a couple months after purchase; forcing the dealership to take it back and getting a Jeep instead (which was funny because he was always a BMW, Acura type of guy before the Jeep).
The CR-V is always recommended by the indie Japanese mechanic I use, when considering the RAV4 and Forester. The CR-V is reliable, and not as expensive to own because the AWD only works when the rear wheels slip, otherwise it is a FWD wagon. My SIL was looking for a smaller crossover not long ago to replace a Mazda as a nanny mobile because her nanny cannot handle their MDX or Denali, and my mechanic recommended the CR-V, as he had with a couple of other times I asked for other friends/family.
If they want something a bit more luxurious, but not larger, they might consider a CPO Acura RDX, which is on the same platform as the CR-V, but with permanent SH-AWD.

I had a 2005 Honda CRV for 6 years. I put about 85K miles on it and had no problems. CRV's are very reliable. One thing I really liked about my CRV was that it had armrests on both the driver and passenger front seat.
I have a 2005 CR-V SE with 125k on it. I also love the armrests but my husband doesn't like them. It is comfortable and reliable. We are probably getting a bigger car soon bcs we really need a third row vehicle. The middle seat between a car seat and a booster is a joke.
It's a great car. I have to say I don't love the body style of the redesign but lots of people do. It is big for a small SUV. I have hauled plenty of things in that car-- mattresses, furniture, etc.
I have a 2002 crv which came from Japan and it is a real neat car. Honda soon will have the hrv which is cheaper and smaller than the crv. I also had the 1997 crv when they first came out also a nice car
My son was looking to buy a small SUV last month and we looked at all the usual suspects. FInally settled on the RAV4. Not too crazy about the front end but it had the best interior, at least in the Limited trim. High quality material and nice fit and finish. No CVT either with a surprisingly uncluttered engine bay. I don't think I particularly like any of the compact SUVs out there.
I have a 2012 VW Tiguan. While I enjoy driving it (it's turbocharged), I will never purchase another VW. Bought it new, it came with 36000 miles warranty. At 39000 fuel pump went out, cost to replace was $650 out of pocket. The interior feels nicer than most Japanese competitors, very similar to Audi Q5. I believe new Porsche Macon is based on the Tiguan's platform.
