I personally like that truck esp. because it is a Rather Rare stick shift and has a 8-Foot Bed I guess it is up to you OP best bet would be to take it to a independent mechanic that is familiar with these trucks to go over it and to find out the history and service records on it.

Long bed, extended cab and manual transmission? That would be exactly what I would be looking for. That is what sold me on my current pickup.

Nothing else will do.

Now when I used to finance cars in a rural area, those people actually used them. They owned a lot of land and actually towed stuff all the time. Lawn equipment, horses, livestock, serious off roading, etc. Where I live now, it's more of a status thing.
Oh, I absolutely LOVE the people who buy diesel pickups, RVs, etc. without the first clue about diesel engines. You have any idea how much side work I've gotten lined up? Especially from people with the 2009 - 2011 Cummins engines with just the DPF, but not the SCR? Plus I have my own copy of Insite, along with a wireless NexIQ box with SAEJ1939 and OBDII plugins. Hell yes. Keep buying those diesel pushers and pickups!

Pretty Safe with a 97, (better if it was a Cummins 12v. ,,,avoiding a 53 block.)

thus I keep my 'older' pre 94 cummins. I have a few and they are cheap (under $3000 for 4x4 dually) they will last 1+ million miles and none of my 30+ diesels have darkened the door of a fix-it shop.

YMMV

I meant 97- no such thing as an 87, lol

Which is why I bought an older gasser. I like the GM 6.0 gas passer. With the 5 speed manual it pulls the trailer and equipment I have without a whole lot of fuss. It pulls my 5th wheel camper into the hills and mountains.

How does that 6.0 do compared to the 7.4 on mpg and pulling power?I've only had a 6.0 in the SS and the fuel killed me,but I've had several 7.4s in cc dually 4x4 and looooooved them..thirsty as well though.

The 6.0 is better than 5.7 or 350, that, IMO, is the most overrated chevrolet engine. It is no 454. My 3/4 ton gets 13 to 14 empty, running anywhere from 65 to 75 down the road. Pulling, anywhere from 8 to 13, depends on wind and what I am pulling. The 8.1 is more like the 7.4 power and economy.

thats about the same as the 1/2 SS did for me...with a roughly 3500# bass boat behind it,it would drop into the 10ish range.

I've heard you almost have to have a midair refueling tanker following you if you are running the 8.1 fully loaded, but they have the grunt.

The 5.7 I had, empty was an 11 mpg rig.

The last time I crossed a scale with my current ride and trailer loaded was 16,000 pounds. One I unloaded it was 12,000 pounds of pickup and trailer.
